What I Learned In October

A reflection of the month

October was a month of movement for me.

September was full of my Storyaday writing challenge which resulted in my realization I was moving from my creation phase to a revision phase. I vowed to make October more about revision. It also became about movement forward in the name of joy and fun.

In October I started the Inktober challenge — where you draw daily in response to a prompt. I decided to make doodles and posted many to Instagram. It was an exercise that brought me back to a creative pursuit I haven’t focused on for a long while. I used to doodle all the time and found it calming and fun.

In October, I attended a conference in Atlanta,Georgia. The learning was about the new program but I also learned a lot about myself and people I work with. A gift of the conference was a session which centers around a teaching method called the painted essay. I played with watercolors. I was able to tap into a creative side that hasn’t come out since college.

In October, I came back to poetry in a big way. It was the rejuvenation I needed. Many of my poems are published on Medium.
