Stories with friends is LeVar Burton’s new podcast where he sits down with a friend as the title implies and talks about reading. The guest brings a short piece of fiction for the two of them to talk about. It is like a podcast and book club rolled all in one.

This is a spin off of his podcast LeVar Burton Reads which focused this week on The Specialist’s Hat by Kelly Link which is a favorite of mine. She is one of my favorite short story writers.

The idea of sitting down with a friend, sharing a loved piece of fiction together, and talking about it appeals to the intellectual analytical mind I have for stories. I love to read because it allows me to see how other people’s thinking. I suppose I like to write to share my own thinking with others.

In the first episode with Amanda Seales, they talk about reading as a child and how exciting the Scholastic book fair was. She also makes a nod to Reading Rainbow — which how can you not with LeVar Burton as the host!

If we were sitting down and having a chat about reading I would want to know:

What books did you have to read in high school? Did you like them? How have they influenced your reading now?
