Stop Labeling Kids Reluctant Readers
You Might Be One Yourself
As an educator for almost 25 years I have seen all types of readers in adults and children. A common label for students is RELUCTANT READERS as their primary reading identity and it needs to stop.
Are students unwilling and hesitant? Sometimes.
Am I a reluctant reader….sometimes.
But it is not my primary reading identity or anyone else’s.
There are lots of factors that can contribute to a student not wanting to read.
- Choice of text
- Choice of topic
- Time to read
- A place to read
- No sleep or nourishment
As a coach I have seen teachers create a culture in their classrooms which is NOT conducive to reading.
As educators it is part of our job to create a greenhouse effect for students. We are to provide as close to a perfect environment so students will flourish and engage and grow as readers and learners.
Teachers are human too but impose limitations that are unnecessary. For example, in the past building teachers worked closely with the district librarian to make sure every student had access to e-books available through the county library…
