Every Friday I do a freewrite for 5 minutes on the FIVE MINUTE FRIDAY chosen word. Today’s word is NAME.

Naming things has become important to me lately. It helps me put a parameter around an event or an idea that I am struggling with. I can then connect to what I need to deal with or think about.

I have done writing exercises in the past with students to have them write about their names. They write about where the name came from, who they are named after, and if they like their name usually. My name is from Debbie Reynold’s Tammy character. I do not like my name and never have. I do not think that it fits me. Annie seems like a better name to me.

Naming things prevents them from being lost.

Names are titles. They are labels. They are definitions. They are limits.

Names have to feel right though and sometimes that is about trial and error. If I have named a document or a character in one of my stories the wrong name then I cannot remember it. I will be writing along and have to look up to previous paragraphs to remember the name I have given them.

I wish I had a naming ceremony. I feel if I did then the process of naming anything would be easier.
